Tokyo: The land of the rising....Club

In Kürze: In the frame of Defected releasing it's In The House 'Tokyo '11' compilation mixed by UK She DJ RAE and Japanese duo Studio Appartment we are releasing a nice report about Tokyo's clubbing scene..

Vollständig: Think of Japan and your mental collage will probably be made up of high speed trains, super-futuristic gadgets, Anime, sumo wrestling, karaoke and sushi. I could confidently bet you would not automatically think of clubbing or dance music. However, Tokyo is fast becoming an ever stronger and influential force in the world of dance music and its time we started to pay their scene the respect it deserves.

It hasn’t always been like this; Tokyo has not had an easy time over the last decade when it comes to dance and youth culture. Japan itself is a sprawling contradiction, where traditional values conflict daily with progress and modernity, especially with regards to its laws. Until recently for example, clubbing was forbidden from midnight till dawn, and although this ‘ban’ has now been loosened to 1am, this kind of curfew is still more than a little conservative for the contemporary Japanese clubber.

Even with all these hurdles, Tokyo has not held back; clubbers there are fanatically enthusiastic and parties still happen although many are driven underground, with promoters finding ever-more innovative ways to bend the rules. However their relentless passion has almost forced the authorities to tolerate this harmless activity. And it has worked, of late promoters and clubs have been unhindered by the police as they are thankfully starting to turn a blind eye to people enjoying music and dancing.

Despite these archaic laws, the dance scene continues to proliferate and is currently healthy and flourishing. Signs that things are correcting themselves came with the launch of Toyko club ‘eleven’ in February this year, which brought new energy to the Japanese capital’s dance scene with its big name DJs and boisterous dancefloor. There are also many other clubs that continue to flourish, with the original leader ageHa setting the standard, then followed by Womb, WAREHOUSE702 and Air. All are enjoying a renaissance and predicting a much better future for the scene.

It’s because of this wonderful hullabaloo that Defected will soon be releasing new double-disc comp Defected In The House Tokyo '11, mixed by singing Kings Of Tomorrow collaborator Rae and those other, super-stylish Tokyo soul-house veterans Studio Apartment. This is an album that reflects and pays homage to the new sound of revolutionary Japanese nightlife.

For those of you yet acquainted with Studio Apartment, they are the home grown vocal infused production duo Masanori Morita (DJ/Producer) and Noboru Abe (Keyboards). Here Masanori takes the responsibility of bringing us his DJ snapshot of the Tokyo dance scene which he neatly packages it in his mix. The opening track showcases Studio Apartments newsiest production ‘Your Words’ which was produced in collaboration with super talented DJ and vocalist Rae.

Rae is certainly tipped as an artist that will make an impact on the Japanese scene. With her debut tour scheduled for January next year. Her work with Studio Apartment inspired this special mix collaboration. Rae a relatively new artist broke onto the scene with ‘Can’t Stop’ produced by legendary international house head Sandy Rivera/Kings of Tomorrow. This record firmly bedded itself as an instant classic. Her follow up ‘Persuasion’ (a beautiful slice of timeless vocal house) has since become an MTV dance number 1. As well as being a superb vocalist and singer songwriter, Rae is also an accomplished international DJ with a unique show, she P.A’s her tracks live during her performance and brings her recordings to life. This is her debut mix that includes her new rework of the classic ‘Hide U’ with Sandy Rivera, tipped to be a bona fide big tune.

The album also features tracks from Grego Salto, Copyright, Matijin Ten Velden, DJ Gregory, ATFC, Tong & Spoon, KOT, Tensnake, Micheal Gray & Danism.

Defected In The House Tokyo '11 is out 25th October and you can catch Studio Apartment playing at Ministry of Sound on Saturday 30th October..
