Clubland is going Dutch, and on the double…

Go to Defected.com Get These Tracks Get This Player Amsterdam, the city of sin that hosts Europe’s biggest Dance Festival, is now being touted as the new dance capital of Europe. It’s the hedonist’s number one weekend party destination.

Ask any muso, industry big wig or fanatical clubber and they’ll tell you Miami is floundering. Amsterdam is where it’s all happening; in the studios, behind the scenes and in the clubs of Europe’s new dance destination. This combined with the city’s infamous edgy lifestyle makes it almost an irresistible proposition for many young pleasure seekers. Oh and it’s a 45 min flight away.

The big story is the increasingly influential Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) which this year takes place between October 21st and 24th. ADE is 50% festival 50% conference and is Europe’s leading electronic music event, a kind of ‘Miami Music Conference’ for Europeans, mixing high-powered conference with high-spirited clubnights. Already in its 14th year, this year’s DJ line-up includes David Guetta, Erick Morillo and The Swedish House Mafia, and perhaps best reflects the prominent status Amsterdam is starting to enjoy on the global stage.

For many it has traditionally been known as a smoking paradise for backpackers, a place with very liberal attitudes, where you can be a little naughty. But it’s not the red light district, the coffee shops or the populations strange bike fetishes that make this place one of the coolest and most edgy cities in Europe, it’s the newly blossoming Dance music scene. Amsterdam is happening and the club/music scene has never been healthier.

The city has seen a strong upsurge in dance music events, new club openings, festivals and even beach parties of late. It has earned a reputation as one of the premier cities in Europe to rival even Berlin’s stronghold of cool. The city is home to many of the world’s most influential producers and djs, in fact Holland has some of the world’s best talent including Fedde Le Grand, Armin Van Buren, Tiesto and Ferry Corsten. Even Roger Sanchez has based his record label there and DJ Gregory recently moved there to gather inspiration.

It is Festivals that are definitely fuelling this huge growth curve. With events like Mysteryland, Loveland, Lakedance and the Awakenings Festival all serving up both rapidly emerging and long established DJ talent from around the world.

Amsterdam also cultivates a great deal of its own home-grown talent. Take for example Hardsoul and Chocolate Puma, both recognised as the biggest house music DJs in Holland and well renound the world over. Hardsoul’s Roog was voted No.1 House DJ of Holland for three consecutive years by Dutch dance magazine; Basic Groove. They have also been responsible for classic dancefloor moments such as ‘Back Together’ and ‘Self Religion’.

Chocolate Puma have been responsible for a number of club hits over the years including The Good Men ‘Give It Up’, ‘I Wanna Be U’, ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘Always And Forever’. They are hugely respected artists who spend all their time producing the finest dance music Amsterdam has to offer. It is these artists that convey the current sound of the Amsterdam underground.

Between them they have produced the album Defected In The House Amsterdam 09, that reflects what the city is becoming famous for, its peak time dancefloor experiences.

The album includes a special Amsterdam guide booklet with a detailed map of Hardsoul and Chocolate Puma’s favourite places to hang. Check it out, it’s the alternative cool guide to the city. But remember - what happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam.

Roog (Hardsoul): “Amsterdam has traditionally been one of the greatest cities in the world for nightlife, because of Amsterdam's great party people we still have some of the coolest parties on the planet.”

Chocolate Puma: “When it comes to food, fashion, music and design Amsterdam is very innovative and inspiring to live in. We like to say that one of the best things about Amsterdam is the fact that it has all the ingredients like London or Paris but you can use your bike instead of the car or subway to get to where you want to be!”
