Mixed by Gregory and Anton Wirjono - Defected in the House - Bali '10.
‘Island of the gods’ amended to ‘Party Island of the gods’, as the clubbing sound of Bali is encapsulated by DJ Gregory.
Bali is known as the ‘Island of the Gods’, an oasis of tropical beauty located east of Java in Indonesia, known for its white sandy beaches and surf, its own special band of Hinduism and a thriving night-life. It stakes a claim of being one of the most beautiful and alluring places on earth, especially for insomniac music lovers who love to dance.
Apart from the obvious pastimes of sunbathing and surfing, the other big activity on the island is clubbing. The island has developed a thriving late night/early morning scene that caters for the discerning tastes of its international party people. Its reputation as a new exotic party destination has developed over the years and it now promises all the finesse of European clubbing destinations but without leaving a huge dent in the wallet.
In addition to its own home-grown DJ talent, the island regularly host nights featuring some of the world’s best known DJs and producers; from Sasha to Tiesto, Pete Tong to Armand Van Helden and everyone in between. This is a hedonist’s paradise, especially hedonists with an ear for quality dance music.
It’s not just nightclubs that encourage and promote the scene, Bali has its own electronic dance music festival called Junction; an annual outdoor festival on the beach, where you can party till dawn with the sand between your toes and the sea lapping at your feet. Free-spirited and fun, it is compounded by a truly mesmerizing setting.
Spearheading the festival this year is Defected In The House, an experienced dance label that has a huge international reach, with recent festivals from clubbing Mecca’s as far as Goa, Singapore and Europe already under its belt.
Headlining the event will be DJ Gregory, the well-known international DJ who is no stranger to the island, having played there previously;
“I’ve been to Bali many times for the Junction Festival, and the vibe is great. Weather is amazing, the island is just dope and Indonesian people are just so kind and welcome you the best they can”.
Defected Records were quick to recognize that the Island had a happening scene and sound, and has set about the task of reflecting the sound of the islands clubs and festivals as well as showcasing its unique musical style. The man to do this is DJ Gregory, already famed for his exotic take on music having drawn a great deal of influence from Brazil, Africa and Indonesia. Here he has put together an upfront collection of his own tried and tested floor-filling productions as well as host of other dancefloor gems that also represent his sound.
“I tried to give different flavors from Afro ish (French Fries ‘Predator’ or ‘Dama S Salon’ I did with Sidney Samson) to much deeper moods (Boris Werner remix of ‘Lost in the Streets of NYC’, or ‘Les Enfants Du Bled ‘ by Soha. The project I had with Julien Jabre or Jairo Catelo ‘Suspicious Mind’ (one of my favorite cuts of the year) and certain ruff cuts like the classic ‘Ok Alright’ by Buddha Khan or going with the new Quentin Harris which is dope by the way!”
As a respectful nod to the home grown talent of the DJs that have rocking the Balinese dance floors since they started, CD 2 is mixed Anton Wirjono, a seasoned and well known Indonesian DJ who is credited as being the catalyst to the regions dance scene. He is the founder and promoter of the Junction festival and is a pioneer in the regions dance scenes. His mix is a little more laidback than Gregory’s and is perfect for your poolside listening. A track that sums up his vibe is Ebbo ‘The Way’ a perfect track for being on the beach at Bali.
Bali is a place that many Europeans visit, partying in paradise is at the top of the list of any self-respecting clubber and music lover.
You can catch DJ Gregory at the Defected In The House stage at Junction July 30th Aug 1st.
