Raw Music Material – the book

Electronic music is seriously challenging the reign of pop and rock music, aging art forms dying at the hands of multi-national music-industry giants. Raw Music Material tells you why. Some of the world's most cutting-edge DJs have played at Rohstofflager (warehouse for raw material), one of Zurich’s hippest clubs. Raw Music Material presents 49 of them in images, words and sound. Arsène Saheurs, a Zurich-based photographer, has portrayed the DJs at Rohstofflager for the past five years, creating an archive of the faces behind the electronic revolution in music. Statements in the DJ’s own words on their lives and their music add up to a history of techno, house, drum’n’bass and electronic music in general.

The book tells the story of a musical paradigm shift, instigated by a couple of black middle-class boys in Detroit. They listened to Kraftwerk and European electro music, started to use computers and synthesizers and began to create tracks that were the minimalist essence of funk, soul, disco and electro. In the US, they remained an underground cult, but in post-cold war Europe they found a rapt audience. Soon, techno gained an astonishing momentum in Europe; a dense network of labels, clubs and artists (among them many African-Americans) evolved in the early 90s, breaking the hegemony of melody-driven rock and pop music and their sentimental narratives. A new club culture that was no longer based on neither disco nor new-wave blueprints came to life. DJs became producers and vice versa, abandoning traditional notions of authorship and performance. The texts in Raw Music Material illuminate this astonishing phenomenon, an eponymous convergence of African-American grooves and European will to experimentation. On the two enclosed CDs, you can hear the DJ’s favorite tracks: after all, it’s not enough to just read about music...

Raw Music Material is an indispensable and entertaining overview of electronic music today that will stimulate your brain and ears.

Rohstofflager – the club

For a long time considered as a boring sidetrack, Zurich has become a stronghold for electronic music in recent years – not least as a result of the platform created at the Rohstofflager club. Established 1997, Rohstofflager was on the forefront of club-culture from the beginning; through the belief in quality, innovation and style. Soon the word was out that this club in Zurich has some of the world’s best DJs playing in a unique location; the name Rohstofflager became famous all over Europe. Owner Walter Huegli, in collaboration with his partners Martin Frigg and Arnold Meyer as well as club-curator Philipp Meier, now pushes things even further. The new club-lounge Toni Molkerei and the successful start of the Electronic Music Radio will definitely help to establish an international center of electronic music in Zurich.

The people behind the club and the book

Walter Huegli (born 1957) is the founder of Rohstofflager club. As a pioneer in club culture, he decided to leave the walls of the warehouse where the club had its first location as raw as they were and to work with projectors. The second dancefloor, called Stratos, was designed as a completely white room with a unique color changing system based on a moody light concept (often used in the wellness industry). His most recent project – the oversized club lounge Toni Molkerei – can be described as a walk-through art installation. Further to Rohstofflager and Toni Molkerei he is the founder of the Electronic Music Radio and, together with his brother, owner of Masani’s Ambient Media.
Walter Huegli lives and works in Zurich.

Martin Jaeggi (born 1969) studied film and new media in New York and San Francisco. He works as an editor and writer for Scalo Publishers and also as an author.

Arnold Meyer (born 1965) is a central figure for techno and club culture in Switzerland. He has been organising events and parties since 1990, among them Switzerland’s biggest rave, Energy (every year after the street parade) and Motion, a major outdoor party. He is the co-owner of Rohstofflager.
