FABRIC IS TEN… 15th - 16th - 17th - 18th Oct 2009

In Kürze: FABRIC IS TEN! Thursday 15th OCTOBER – Friday 16th OCTOBER – Saturday/Sunday 17th & 18th October. Towards the beginnings of the 90s, Londoner Keith Reilly went on a quest to find the venue of his drea.

Vollständig: Towards the beginnings of the 90s, Londoner Keith Reilly went on a quest to find the venue of his dreams. Ashamed of the commercial club explosion, something that had taken over and corrupted the little scene that true clubbers no longer felt an alliance with, he decided to return to his roots…to the days where music was all that mattered, and soundsystems were the only focus. The days when music and art collided, and the product was a collective experience of open-minded bliss; where two completely different people with completely different backgrounds could share exactly the same moment with one DJ set. After nearly a decade-long mission dedicated to the perfect space - in the meantime pairing up with partner Cameron Leslie and finding a core team of kindred spirits – on 21st October, 1999, fabric opened its doors for the first time.

Dreamers are dreamers, and they often don’t find a place in the real world - but fast forward 10 years later…and here we are, still standing, unmoved, behind the idealism on which the club’s foundations were initially built. We didn’t want a space that would dictate to people how to behave or how to dress. Really, we didn’t want a space that would be anything beyond just that – a space. To this day, fabric’s just spit and sawdust, a winding ex-meat-cellar that only comes to life via a great soundsystem, musical passions and an amazing group of people that fill our dancefloors each weekend. The only thing that’s really changed over the last 10 years is the flowers in our vases and the records on our turntables. And the wrinkles on our faces, but those are mainly smile creases (good wrinkles).

Now, as we get ready to commemorate a decade of music, we decided to turn to our most cherished friends and family for the celebrations, those who have helped shape us every step of the way. A family reunion, so to speak.

On Thursday, we're taking in the bass related movements we've grown with over the years - specifically our two most central fixtures, DJ Hype (whose monthly Playaz night has been the only night at fabric to consistently sell out without fail) and the man who has quick-mixed his rewinds and double drops til the very last second of the majority of our Friday nights, Andy C. And we’re bringing in a newer addition to the bottom of our bassbins, Caspa, our label artist (releasing Dec ‘07's ‘FABRICLIVE 37’ with Rusko, and his debut LP 'Everybody's Talking, Nobody's Listening' on Fabric Records) whose Dub Police night has become one of the most ground breaking (literally and figuratively) additions to our calendar this last year.

On Friday, it's three rooms of FABRICLIVE for all of its movements and modulations, embracing everything from the squelchy rock-electro that has filled our floors to the hip hop classics that have kept hands in the air (waved around like they just don’t care, naturally); to the hyper house beats that have helped pave a new path for our Friday night sound. It will be a showcase of the names that have touched our flyers even more than our designers - Scratch Perverts, Craze, Klever, Zinc, Filthy Dukes...a FABRICLIVE hall of fame.

On Saturday, the lineup conjures up a variety of words - awe-inspiring, staggering, sentimental, vital, historical...basically, the only word it doesn’t inspire is SLEEP. We will be open from Saturday night at 11pm until Monday morning - nonstop. The disco will not close its doors, nor will the rave cease, at any point. Some artists will play one set, and some will play multiple sets in different rooms over the rather epic 2 day bender. It will be a family affair through and through, with a soundtrack that will concurrently celebrate the past as much as look forward to the future. We have yet to reveal exact hours/prices at this time – an announcement will follow shortly.

FAQ’s ABOUT FABRIC…

Where did the name fabric come from?
Funny question, that. Only because there isn’t much we can offer in the way of an answer. We deliberately chose a word that wouldn’t have any reasoning behind it, because to us the only names that mattered were the DJ names that were on our flyers. We kept everything as understated as we could, from our flyers (which literally only had the artists names and an address) to our name, with the hope that the right people would find it if they were looking for it. And we’re very thankful that they have.

Is fabric a superclub?
Yes, fabric is a large nightclub. And yes, we have a record label. But that’s the extent of our association with that ridiculous noun. Please refrain from using that dirty word in our presence, thank you kindly.

How did the label come about?
We’ll let Keith Reilly take that one: "From fabric's launch onwards we encountered an almost daily assault from labels and organisations wishing to partner us in producing a CD. Despite being continually, politely told that we were very busy becoming good party organisers, the crescendo of 'When will you do one? Why don't you do one? Please will you do one?' became deafening, eventually triggering my lifelong tendency to do the exact opposite of what was requested of me. So we just got a bit silly and thought: 'OK, you want one? Try to control this! Here's one a month.' We wanted them to fall from the sky like hailstones on the musical philistines that sought to twist what we were doing into any old shape that spelt numbers to them. I wanted to sell them at £6 on our website, which I felt was indicative and reflective of how I saw the product; as licensed rave tapes."

How many CDs have Fabric Records put out now?
Guess it depends on context. If you’re talking about fabric/FABRICLIVE compilations, then we’re hitting our 100th release this February, with FABRICLIVE 50 (the artist is yet to be announced). But with our other associated releases in mind, we’ll be up to 107 releases in total this February: artist releases include Radioactive Man’s ‘Growl’, Howie B’s ‘Not In The Face’, Stanton Warriors’ ‘Stanton Sessions II’, Buraka Som Sistema’s ‘Black Diamond,’ Caspa’s ‘Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening,’ Scratch Perverts’ ‘Beatdown’, and Elevator Music (our forthcoming bass-geared publishing compilation, featuring the likes of Starkey, Untold and Martyn – more news on that soon).

Are fabric “sell-outs”?
No, actually. And we can say that with much confidence. Despite the thousands of pounds/dollars/Euros we’ve been offered to take fabric on tour or put the fabric name on the back of some naff pair of sweatpants, we’ve adamantly kept our name on only two things: our little corner of EC1 and our CD tins. Please see the footnote* below (in bold, and an extra large font, so you won’t miss it – not the most subtle of footnotes) for news of fabric putting its name on a lovely little project that stems as a part of our 10th birthday celebrations.

Who’s been the most exciting customer to come to fabric?
As we’re not a star bar, the general attitude for fabric has always been (quite aptly): “fit in or fuck off.” We’ve had our some pretty hilarious encounters with “celebrities” who believed they deserved special treatment, but we’re much more enamoured by those who actually fit in. We salute one punter in particular that rode his bike all the way from Norwich to come to see his favourite DJ (that’s a 100 mile bike ride).

*FABRIC T-SHIRTS…
After years of punters offering our bar staff unimaginable wads of ca$h for their fabric tees, and years of us refusing to sell our name on t-shirts, we decided to bend the rules for the first time. After all, you only turn 10 once.

Next month, in true birthday spirit, we will be unleashing a special batch of limited edition t-shirts. Showcasing the vibrant club/label artwork of our designers Village Green, and a few throwbacks of the aforementioned bar-staff gear, the tees will be a retrospective of the last decade. T-shirts will go on sale: 1 October for fabricfirst members - 15 October (the day our birthday party commences) for the general public. More information will be available soon, watch this space..
