Still refusing to adopt a completely commercial approach, Claude Nobs and his team provide the public with a varied musical menu featuring, in most cases, exclusive Swiss performances.
“If it wasn’t complicated, it wouldn’t interest me!” says Claude Nobs when asked about his special projects, which represent some of the Festival highlights. This year’s programme includes a three-night tribute to Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records; a world premiere performance by Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang and the reunion of Status Quo and John Fogerty.
These impressive gala nights set the tone of a Festival that constantly cultivates its difference. Each evening at the Auditorium Stravinski and Miles Davis Hall is conceived of as a complete project, in which bands are brought together to form a logical whole.
This musical vision deserves to be shared. The Festival experience begins in the afternoon and continues late into the night. The two big venues are indisputably the event’s standard-bearers, but the entire programme is an extension of the Montreux spirit. And in most cases, festival-goers will only have to pay for their trip to the shores of Lake Geneva! In effect, the range of free entertainment – which spans workshops, competitions, nightspots and the open-air Music in the Park programme – is as impressive as ever.
