IMS: International Music Summit – The Story So Far...

The inaugural International Music Summit in Ibiza has responded to the challenges facing the electronic music industry and marked the successful arrival of a new forum in the dance music calendar.

Attended by many of the most senior, proactive and heavyweight industry figures and artists in today’s scene, the future of the industry was fiercely debated over three days of intensely programmed panels and events. Legendary music producer and Key Note speaker Francois K exclaimed that the IMS was "The most amazing conference I've ever seen. I am looking forward to seeing what this grows into next year”. Simply, lots got done and lots got learnt!

Dubbed ‘back to business’; partying was far from most delegates minds, as they made the most of the intimate gatherings of fellow professionals. IMS was an invite-only affair, sold on its ability to put the major players in one area. Everybody took advantage of the networking opportunities, with many saying they had done more business in one morning then in an entire week at other conferences.

David Glick, founder of legal, investment and corporate finance boutique Edge Group, said: "The IMS has spotted a real need for a high quality, invitation-only event focusing on the top people in the electronic music market and has brought them together with a range of high quality speakers. I was delighted to be invited. I learned a lot and I had a great time. I came away with a fist-full of business cards I'm going to be following up on. A really first rate event."

Not surprisingly, Digital was a key theme for delegates, inside and out of the panel discussions and representatives from flourishing and profitable dance music websites such as DJDownload.com and Beatport.com shared their visions for the future. Co-founder of IMS Ben Turner states: “The digital day highlighted how united electronic music culture is, and how in tune the key protagonists in our industry are with our music-buying audience. Note: music-buying!”

Andrew Keen, based in Silicone Valley and author of the controversial book ‘The Cult of the Amateur: How the Internet is Killing our culture’ led a debate on the challenges the digital age is bringing for creativity in the music industry at large. However, reflecting on the conference, Keen stated: “Whereas the traditional music industry is in the doldrums, electronica is experiencing a golden age. Electronica has much to teach the rest of the music world and mainstream labels need to take note of the club scene”. Indeed, as he articulated in his key note speech, the electronic world may be the “first example of an audience being so in tune with their artists that they would rather buy than steal” - the way forward…

The summit also took the opportunity to look closely at the domestic Ibiza music scene. The panel entitled ‘Ibiza – The Year of Change’ created history with representatives from every major club on the island sitting together publicly for the first time alongside a member of the Ibiza Council. IMS also made conference history by making the event ‘anthem’ in front of delegates, with electronic don Tom Middleton producing a track titled ‘Remember The Love’ for charity. The following day Soul Avengerz remixed the anthem, and on the closing day, Bruno Roussel, music editor on Six Feet Under, synchronised it to a movie. IMS are taking sealed bids for the record.

At a time of uncertainty in the music industry the International Music Summit left all attendees feeling refreshed, inspired and full of positivity for our beautiful dance music scene. Pete Tong states: “What happened in Ibiza last week will impact our future and the way the music industry moves forward. The response is overwhelming, people have walked away with ideas for the future, with new relationships forged from different aspects of electronica.”

IMS 2009 will take place on Wednesday May 27 to Friday May 29 inclusive. Visit www.internationalmusicsummit.com for information. Turner states: “IMS feels like dance music’s Web 2.0, and keeping the intimacy and the quality of delegate’s to the dealmakers is our ultimate goal.”

TESTIMONIALS

“A good opportunity for people across the music industry to network, share ideas and generate debate in a low-pressure environment away from the stress of sales pitches too frequently found at similar conventions” Kim de Ruiter, Label Head of Business Development, Mercury Music Group

“… IMS managed to deliver a series of interesting, informative and focussed panels within a structured networking environment. I came away enlightened, informed, inquisitive and a little bit angry, which are all no bad thing in this age of industry indecision. I’ve already been recommending it to my top level European contacts who were missing this year and won’t hesitate to carry on singing its praises. Hopefully the IMS team will be able to keep the ball rolling over the coming year with a dedicated attendee online forum or similar.” Tim Binns, New State

“First of all I am very happy to be part of and support the first edition of IMS…Finally, a new era for Ibiza & World dace Music Industry… Everyone was relaxed and talking about business which doesn’t exist at the WMC anymore. So I am sure that the IMS will be the place to be for the entire people around the World, who loves & support Dance Music... Date to watch: IMS May 2009…” DJ Pippi

“The IMS was a truly unique experience. To be assembled with the world leaders in the dance music industry and hear their words of wisdom was inspiring to say the least; as well as hanging out with old friends it was fantastic to meet so many of my musical heroes. Add the weather and some great hospitality and I can safely say I had a ball.” Fred Deakin, Lemon Jelly

“A rare opportunity to meet and talk with people I spend the rest of the year trying to meet and talk to!” Garry Blackburn, Anglo Plugging

“To me IMS was a grand vision – actualized. Most of the delegates seem to have been in the business for at least 10 years, many spoke of 20 year benchmarks. And yet we all seemed to still be searching and striving to push the boundaries, to explore the edges, and to keep infusing electronic music and the business associated with it into fresh and exciting new territory. I’ll be back annually for this summit.” Randy Reed, Red Light Management

“I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the IMS, both as a participant and as part of the audience on (nearly!) all the panels, it was refreshing and really interesting on many many levels. I very much look forward to next year, so thank you...” Layo Paskin, The End / Layo & Bushwacka!

“I must commend all of you on making the first IMS an amazing success. The conference provided a unique environment where professionals from all capacities of the electronic music industry could network, learn, and plan for the future, in an ideal setting. I look forward to next year’s event.” Adam Wolf, Senior Creative Director, Pig Factory

“Thanks so much for inviting me to participate in the IMS. I had a very rewarding and illuminating time, and picked up some valuable contacts (and work!) along the way. Having attended and participated in the New Music Seminar, In The City, WMC, London Calling, Great Escape etc etc, the seminar has become an instant personal favourite. It easily stands up against some of Tony Wilson's finest moments, and in spirit reminded me of being a producer at Peter Gabriel's Real World recording week in 1991, where dozens of musicians got together to collaborate. That week had a very special buzz, a feeling of new territories being explored, and I could sense something similar in Ibiza last week. It's no mystery why every session was packed - a great range of programming and top class panellists made each debate a great experience. There may be room for improvement in some areas, but as an initial year's work it was excellent. Everybody involved deserves many congratulations.” Richard Norris, The Grid / Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve

“Great great great, liked the intimacy, kind of similar to what musexpo is for rock music, great panels, great people… looking forward to come to the 2009 IMS…” Oliver Zahringer, Big Star Records

“I’ve have attended conferences/summits in New York, Miami, Amsterdam, Berlin, Cannes, etc for over 20 years. This was the most intelligently thought out event I’ve been to.” John Saunderson, Notting Hill Music

“What impressed me the most about the conference was the following:- excellent choice of delegates; subjects of each panel and the panellists; choice of venues and the organisation. I look forward to attending the IMS 2009!” Mitch Clark – Jam Artist Management

‘I had such a great time at the IMS this year. So good to get so many of the movers and shakers in the business in one place in a relaxed environment such as poolside in Ibiza. The panels were excellent and highly focused and I was also able to catch up with people I haven’t seen in ages as well as meet lots of new associates. A great start for what will hopefully become a regular date in the diary. See you next year.’ Richard Colman – Suesse Records
