In Kürze: The Very Best of Moby.

Vollständig: THE casual listener of Moby was probably introduced to the botak vegan through his hit 1999 album Play – which offered catchy piano-punctuated white-man blues (the likes of Natural Blues, Honey and Find My Baby). In case you didn’t know, though, Moby straddles the worlds of song and dance by putting together earthy vocals, organic instruments and electronic beats.

On Go, you’ll get a fair share of those, as well as his low-key soarers, such as We Are All Made of Stars and the almost ecclesiastical Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?. This blend of sweet gospel and ambient beats has been, not least, picked up by advert makers – the classic example being In My Heart which you’ll recognise from Nokia’s N series commercial. Another song to have made an impact is Porcelain, the backward-masked chiller which was used as the signature tune for 1999’s The Beach movie.

This “best of” also offers a glimpse into Moby’s almost mythical beginnings ... as the underground DJ who in 1993 released the world’s fastest song at 1015 BPM and toured with The Prodigy, Orbital and Aphex Twin.

Indeed, after the previous tracks’ politically-correct wallpaper, Feeling So Real (from 1994) pounds in with a bare-faced blast of hi-NRG and a not-too-unwelcome dose of early 1990s warehouse nostalgia. Then there’s the title track, Go (the breakthrough from 1991), which offers repeated “yeahs” over cold bleeps, before a piano note sets the stage for the haunting riff from Twin Peaks (remember that one?).

Overall, Go – The Very Best of Moby covers all the bases from the famous songs (Play onwards at least) to the less-remembered numbers, and an upcoming release or two. At its best, it offers moments that are tender and poignant, and reminds us of the many facets of one of the 1990s’ more enduring outsider artistes. .
