Biographie: Johan Gielen was born on the 23th of February 1968 in Mol (Belgium). At an early age he discovered his love for music and at the age of seventeen he decided to put the two letters DJ in front of his name. As so many other DJ’s, Gielen started by playing at parties and weddings. At the age of eighteen Gielen started to mix in a local disco in Reusel (Holland). He proved to be a fast learner and after a while he became the resident DJ of Dockside, a big Belgium club. There he stood behind the turntables for one year and seven months. During that period Johan got hooked on Trance music…
But being a DJ was not enough. Always busy mixing other peoples records he soon felt the need to make one of his own. And so he started to produce.
Though in Holland his name and fame were not recognized yet, on the other side of the world Gielen climbed the hit-charts with his single ABC&D of Blue Bamboo. Especially in Japan his single was very successful and this meant a new turning point in his DJ career. In 1995 Tokyo’s most famous club ‘The Velfarre’ asked Gielen to come and play there every week. Johan Gielen didn’t have any doubts when he took the offer: “At that point in my life I was single and I wanted to explore the world.” The Velfarre became his residence (till ’97) and the clubbing people were bouncing on Gielens tunes six days a week during a period of two years. In the meanwhile Johan Gielen managed to fly to the studios in Belgium. There he tried to move mountains with his good friend and colleague Sven Maes (Svenson). Together with Svenson, Gielen realised well known projects such as Airscape, DJ Don and Svenson, Body Heat and Boccaccio Life.
DJ Johan Gielen got success in the UK and he was asked to do a remix for Chicane. In Holland, where he went to live after his adventure in Japan, Gielens star was also rising. Last year, Svenson & Gielen started to produce for the Free For All label of ID&T, Holland’s biggest dance company. There they released the first Svenson & Gielen single called ‘The Beauty Of Silence’. This single has been released in numerous countries such as Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Spain, South-Africa and Poland. With their remix of Delerium’s huge hit ‘Silence’ the duo proved to have the ability to produce dance tracks for the masses.
In his long career Johan Gielen played at many parties in- and outside of Holland. This year he performed at Hollands main indoor trance event ‘Trance Energy’ and at the huge dance festival Mystery Land (45.000 people). Last summer Johan was asked to play at four different floats during the Love Parade in Berlin. But too bad for the people who wanted him in Berlin, DJ Johan Gielen was already booked at ‘Privilege’ in Ibiza. He also performed at parties in Johannesburg and Capetown (South Africa). A reflection of Gielen operating behind the decks was released on ID&T Music last may with Johan Gielen’s own compilation ‘Recorded’.
You can see, DJ Johan Gielen leads a hectic life but he manages to make time for his own production company: Johan Gielen Music Productions. The company is still very young and new but the plans and goals for the future are very clear; making good records and license them world wide. Not to release them himself but only to produce: “I give my music to people who know to release it in a good way. It leaves me more time to do what I have to do: produce and perform.” Airscape is Gielens and Maes’ main project but they also did a lot of remix-work. The duo was asked to remix Boy George’s hit ‘Generation Love’. After this they were offered a lot of other remixes such as: Tomski, DJ Tiesto’s ‘Sparkle’, the Venga Boys hit single ‘Kiss’, Scooter and Chicane.
DJ Johan Gielen is not inspired by one person in particular. He searches for inspiration in spirituality. Swimming with dolphins usually means Johan Gielen goes home with a whole lot of new ideas.
